Birthday picnic in the forest

Last Friday it was Rob's 27th birthday and I took the day off work so we could celebrate. There's a big part of me that gets way more excited for other people's birthdays than my own and that's not because I hate getting older - I just love giving gifts and making surprises!

This year I decided to take Rob on a surprise picnic. We headed off out to Friston Forest (near Seven Sisters) and found a secluded spot to munch down on the goodies I made. I realised when I got all the stuff out of the bag that it was a rather beige looking picnic but it was tasty all the same!

After we ate we headed off to the beach to take test out our new DSLR camera's. We both had so much fun testing out the settings and learning a new/old skill together. I say new/old because I actually have a photography A level!

I love photography and sadly it's a hobby I had let fall by the way side these last couple of years. I guess because I didn't have a camera I loved and I just plain ol' got interested in other things. Now things have settled down and I've got a sweet ass new camera I'm raring to go.

The birthday cake - chocolate, coffee and whiskey sponge base with a chocolate and whiskey ganache, buttercream frosting and a salted caramel sauce topped with crystallised ginger and toasted pecans.

Fun fact: pecans are my probably my favourite nut!

The cake is vegan too btw - that means no dairy or eggs! He was pleased!

The accidentally beige picnic. I made vegan sausage rolls, vegan cheese twists and a sun-dried tomato and pesto baked loaf with vegusto no-moo golden. Delicious!

I had a lovely time in the beautifully peacefully countryside. It's always nice to get 'back to nature' as it were. It was relaxing and beautifully simple. Sometimes it's the simple things that teach us to get back to ourselves and remember that life is, well, beautiful.
